TITAN at the MLEG Meeting Helping Advance AI for Media Literacy

Writer's picture: TITANTITAN

This week in Brussels, we had the honor of participating in the Media Literacy Expert Group (MLEG) Meeting, an event dedicated to advancing media literacy and combating disinformation. Our TITAN team not only had a dedicated stand and demo at the event but also actively contributed to discussions that are shaping the future of AI-driven media literacy.

Panel Discussion on AI and Media Literacy

One of the highlights of the meeting was a panel discussion moderated by Laura Zurdo from DGCNET, where experts shared insights into how AI can be leveraged to strengthen media literacy and fight disinformation. Speakers included:

  • Patricia Ruiz Guevara from Maldita.es, a non-profit organization committed to building public trust through journalism, technology, and education. She highlighted the impact of Maldita’s AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot, which received up to 5,000 daily requests for fact-checking during the DANA floods in Valencia—a testament to the growing need for AI-assisted verification tools in times of crisis.

  • Massimo Magaldi, our coordinator for TITAN, discussed our work developing a Socratic AI assistant designed to encourage users to question assumptions and critically evaluate information. TITAN aims to equip individuals with the tools needed to navigate today’s complex information landscape, reinforcing critical thinking skills and helping them discern credible information from disinformation.

  • Pascaline Gaborit for AI4Debunk, a consortium working on innovative AI-driven and participatory tools to counter disinformation. Their initiatives include a web plug-in, Disinfopedia, an interactive app, and VR/AR interfaces to enhance engagement and learning.

Showcasing TITAN: Insights and Feedback

Beyond the panel, the TITAN team’s booth and demo drew significant interest from attendees. The hands-on experience allowed participants to explore the functionalities of TITAN’s Socratic AI assistant.

The valuable feedback received from experts, policymakers, and media literacy advocates will be instrumental in refining TITAN’s design and ensuring it remains a powerful tool for fostering media literacy and critical thinking.

Looking Ahead

The discussions at the MLEG meeting reaffirmed the crucial role AI can play in empowering individuals to navigate the digital world more effectively. TITAN remains committed to collaborating with experts, researchers, and policymakers to refine its AI assistant and contribute meaningfully to the fight against disinformation.

Stay tuned for more updates on TITAN’s progress and upcoming initiatives!
